Investment Team

Whilst the Portfolio Manager has the responsibility for deal origination, structuring, execution and portfolio management, the investment committee will provide ongoing advice and will review the Seneca EIS Portfolio Service’s investment policies, strategies, transactions and performance.

Ian Currie

Ian qualified as a chartered accountant in 1986 with KPMG and has been involved in corporate finance with Peel Hunt & Co, Apax Partners & Co and Altium Capital. He co-founded Zeus Group and at the point of demerger in 2010, the Group had over £350m of assets in a variety of businesses, including corporate finance, private equity, stockbroking and pension administration. Ian sits on the Board of Hedley & Co Stockbrokers, is a founder and majority shareholder of Liberty SIPP, is a partner of Palatine Private Equity LLP and is on the Board of Trustees for the Lowry Arts Centre in Manchester.

Norman Molyneux

Norman qualified as an Accountant in 1981. Since that time he has worked as a Management Consultant for Price Waterhouse and has held various board level positions in manufacturing companies. In 2005, he completed a Masters Degree in Finance and Accounting and he is an FCA Approved Person. Norman founded Acceleris in 2000 to raise finance for start-up and early stage companies. Norman has been advising and securing funding for high growth companies for the last 15 years and has developed an excellent track record of EIS (and latterly SEIS) investing. He has direct experience of the problems facing start-ups and early stage technology companies when raising capital, and continues to be involved in a non-executive or advisory role to several of the companies advised. Norman has built up a strong network of funding sources throughout the UK from high net worth individuals through to larger funding sources.

Steve Charnock

Steve qualified as a chartered accountant in 1986 before joining Charterhouse Securities as a building and construction analyst, later becoming a Managing Director and Head of Research. He was voted number one construction analyst in 2000 and 2001 in the Reuters survey for UK smaller companies. Steve also set up his own consultancy business in early 2003, co-founded Cenkos Fund Managers in 2007 and sits on a number of private and public company Boards.

Michael Beverley

Michael spent the first 28 years of his business career with Arthur Andersen during which time he rose to UK regional and senior managing partner responsible for 3,500 people, 11 offices and a turnover in excess of £350m. In 2001 he founded a range of businesses focused on healthcare and property. Since 2009 Michael has been Chairman of One Medical, a developer of healthcare premises and One Medicare, a primary care service provider

Richard Manley

Richard Manley is a founding Director of Seneca Partners. He was named Managing Partner in 2016. He qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG in 2003. He worked for KPMG for over 5 years, initially in their audit business and latterly in their corporate recovery division working on financial and operational restructurings and formal insolvencies. In 2007, Richard joined NM Rothschild’s leveraged finance team in Manchester before joining Cenkos Fund Managers in June 2008. During his time with Cenkos Fund Managers, manager of a £60m pre-IPO investment fund, Richard gained extensive experience of flotations, fundraisings, mergers, acquisitions and restructurings. Richard holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Birmingham.

Tim Murphy

Tim commenced his finance career with Barclays in 1983 where he fulfilled various corporate and credit roles, before joining County Natwest in 1990 where he held a number of positions in structured and acquisition finance. In 1993, Tim joined the Royal Bank of Scotland’s fledgling Acquisition Finance business, initially establishing the Leeds office. He was subsequently responsible for all UK regional teams before in 2002, founding RBS Corporate & Structured Finance. As Joint Managing Director, he had overall responsibility for the National Mid-Cap structured finance business, whilst also being a member of the Banks Corporate Credit Committee. In 2005, Tim was hired by Deloitte (Manchester) as a corporate finance partner with the remit to establish the National Debt Advisory business, advising on capital raising and stressed debt refinancing. After a successful spell, he joined HBOS as UK Managing Director Large Corporate in 2008. Tim joined Seneca from NorthEdge Capital, where he was a founder Partner of the business which was established to focus on stressed corporate opportunities, he also currently sits on the valuation committee of a major US special situations hedge fund.

Ian Battersby

Ian was one of the founders of Seneca Partners in 2010. Using his extensive experience in corporate banking and wealth management, Ian’s role as Business Development Director involves product and strategy development and responsibility for Seneca’s relationships with banks, institutions and wealth managers.

John Davies

John joined Seneca Partners in June 2015 as Investment Director, assisting in the deal execution of new EIS investments and managing the EIS investment portfolio.

John qualified as a chartered accountant in 2006 having worked for PwC and RSM Robson Rhodes for a combined 4 years, initially in their Audit businesses and latterly in Robson Rhodes’ Transaction Services team. In 2007, John joined BDO, where he predominantly worked in the Transaction Services team but also gained invaluable experience during an 18 month secondment in the Business Recovery side of the business. In 2012, John joined Clearwater Corporate Finance where he completed a number of high profile deals across a broad spectrum of sectors, working alongside a range of clients including private equity, owner managers, management teams and debt funders. During his career to date John has gained extensive experience through the provision of both buy-side and sell-side support in relation to fundraisings, mergers, acquisitions, refinancing and restructurings. John holds a BSc (Hons) in Business and Financial Management from the University of Salford.

Sophie Burke

Sophie works in the private client team in our Haydock office. She provides fund administration services to our clients and assists with the reporting and monitoring of client portfolios. She heads up our client communication operations and ensures that investors are regularly kept up to speed on the status of their investments.

Sophie graduated with a 1st class degree in Management & Leisure from The University of Manchester in 2012. Since graduating Sophie has worked in the pension industry for Bury-based Liberty SIPP where she became a member of the Chartered Institute of Insurance and began working towards a Certificate in Life and Pensions before joining Seneca Partners in September 2014.

Connor Grimes

Connor joined Seneca Partners in September 2014. He actively monitors our existing portfolio, conducts due diligence on potential investee companies and is part of the deal execution team on new investments. He also heads up our internal reporting and monitoring function which forms the basis of all investor portfolio communications.

Previously he gained experience at Kleinwort Benson in London working with their Finance and Principal Investment & Advisory teams. Connor is a graduate of the Rotterdam School of Management where he earned an MSc in Finance & Investments.

Alongside his academic and professional backgrounds, he has competed at the highest level in field hockey in the Netherlands and represented Canada at the Beijing Olympic Games

Andrew Currie

Andrew joined Seneca in 2011 from Cenkos Fund Managers. He worked at Cenkos from August 2007 where he helped manage the £60m pre-IPO investment fund RRF Ltd. In his role as Investment Manager he worked on a number of corporate finance transactions including rights issues, refinancings, restructurings and equity fundraisings. At Cenkos, Andrew was also responsible for the management of a number of investee companies with a focus on retail and leisure businesses.

In his role with Seneca, Andrew supports the Directors in his role as secretary to the board. He also heads up the marketing, PR, social media and event management functions for Seneca Partners.

Andrew graduated from The University of Manchester in 2007 with a B.A. (Hons) in Management and Leisure and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment.

Simon Thorn

Simon has been with Acceleris Capital since December 2004 having graduated from university with a BA (Hons) Degree in Accounting & Finance. He has since completed the certificate in Corporate Finance and is an FCA Approved Person. Simon has advised on over 50 transactions for private and listed SME’s and has led EIS fundraisings with both VC involvement and high net worth individuals. His transactional experience includes fundraisings, restructurings, rights issues, spin-outs and disposals. He is responsible for investment monitoring and communication for several client companies of Acceleris and also provides outsourced company secretarial and accountancy services.

Peter Steele

Peter joined Seneca in 2015 to take up the role of Head of Sales Operations. For the previous 18 years, Peter has held a number of senior positions with both the largest IFA network and one of the largest IFA support service providers where his roles included operational, development and relationship management positions. Peter has experience of working in and with a variety of compliance functions. Along with Ian Battersby, Peter is responsible for Seneca’s relationships with wealth managers and intermediaries.

Adele has over ten years’ experience within the financial services industry. Having graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2000 with a B.A. (Hons) in Business and Applied Social Studies, Adele joined Friends Provident where she worked for six years. During this time she gained extensive experience of the life and pensions industry and in 2005 completed the Chartered Insurance Institute Certificate in Financial Planning. Adele moved into the HNW sector in 2006 after being appointed Manager of the administration team at an independent wealth management company, where she was responsible for the implementation of customer service standards and continuous monitoring of the Financial Services Authority initiative, ‘Treating Customers Fairly’
